In the throes of the medical odyssey that followed, I woke up one morning and opened the blinds in a room we were admitted to after our midnight arrival. I was supposed to be in Egypt that day, to complete filming for a documentary on the Cheops Pyramid. Instead, I’m looking at a giant pyramid from our window at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in America’s Memphis.

Emergencies are manifold but they all have one thing in common: they rob us of our self reliance. No matter the plight, an illness, a natural disaster, war, crime or social injustice...victims need help. Many of you know this without ever having to experience it. But I didn’t get it until it happened to us. And that's why I'm creating an annual telethon in support of the afflicted today.
